Common Windows application issues

Error 1001 during installation

This error often appears when installing the application on Windows 7/8 installations which are not up-to-date.

Please try updating your Windows system through Windows Update, then try installing the application again. Also, try and make sure that your .NET Runtime is updated to version 4.6.2.

You can also try disabling your Antivirus / Firewall / Security software, and installing TAP adapter (which our application uses to create a VPN connection) manually - then installing the NordVPN app again.

Crash / Freeze

  1. Press the Windows+R key combination to open the "Run" window.
  2. Type in "services.msc" without the quotes, and press enter to open the "Services" window.
  3. In the services list, find and right-click Task Scheduler, and then click Start if it is not running.
  4. Do the same for Windows Event Log as well.

Kill Switch does not work

In the Kill Switch application adding dialog, please make sure to add the direct executable file, instead of the application shortcut. For example, you can add Skype to the Kill Switch list by adding this file:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Skype\Phone\Skype.exe

Once connected to the VPN server, there is no internet access

At first, try changing the server you are connecting to. If you are connecting by simply selecting the country, please try selecting a specific server within the same country from the servers tab. Also, please flush your DNS cache by following this tutorial:

The issue may also be caused by your antivirus, firewall, or other security software. Try disabling it (or even better, uninstalling it) and test if the issue persists then.

If that doesn't help, try changing the DNS servers you are using when connected to the VPN. To do so, simply:

  1. Navigate to the Settings tab of the NordVPN application.
  2. Scroll to the bottom, click "Advanced settings" and "I know what I'm doing".
  3. Scroll to Custom DNS, and turn it on.
  4. Click "Add another DNS", enter
  5. Click "Add another DNS" again, and enter
  6. Afterwards simply try to connect again.

If that does not help, try this solution:

  1. Open Command Prompt with Admin Rights (
  2. Then paste in this one by one:
    ipconfig /release
    ipconfig /all
    ipconfig /flushdns
    ipconfig /renew
    netsh interface show interface
    netsh winsock reset
  3. After that, restart your PC ant try connecting to the servers again.

Certain feature of the application is not working properly (Killswitch, Map, Favorites and etc.)

      1. Open our application
      2. Go to Settings.
      3. Scroll down and select Show advanced settings.
      4. Scroll down again and run the Diagnostics tool.
      5. In the opened window, select Reset NordVPN.

As a last resort, some of our users reported that once connecting with an alternative connection method (a tutorial for OpenVPN GUI can be found here), the NordVPN application started working for them again.
